Locke Monsters Robotics Need Your Support

A message from Maureen Parker, Science Teacher and Robotics Program Advisor, Locke Middle School:

The Locke Monsters Robotics team had a great day on Saturday, February 23rd at the 2019 Southern New England Regional Championship in Framingham at the Walsh Middle School. The teams ended up winning two of the five available spots to the Worlds in Kentucky by winning two awards.

In a field of 48 teams from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, the 8025B and 8025C teams ended up competing against each other in the finals – with 8025C winning the Tournament Champion Award in an alliance with team 2713C from Melrose, MA to win a spot at the Worlds.

The 8025B team won the Excellence Award securing them a spot at the Worlds as well. The 8025A team won the Think Award, but, unfortunately, that was not a qualifying award for the Worlds.

So we have two teams that have qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship! This will be our fifth consecutive trip to the Worlds!

In addition, the 8025B robot driven by 8th-grade student Joseph Leite is currently 1st in Massachusetts, 32nd in the United States and 46th in the World for Robot Skills out of over 2,000 teams. This is a testament to how hard the team has worked this year to compete at the highest level!

Lastly, to my great delight, I won the VEX Regional Teacher of the Year Award at the Southern New England Regional Championship based on essays written by students and parents from my team. I was very surprised and humbled. The award means a lot to me because I started out five years ago knowing absolutely nothing about robotics or VEX.

I took on the job because I thought it was an important activity for the students and that we could learn it together. I have learned so much from them – it is amazing. I had great help from other VEX coaches along the way – but being a woman in a male-dominated field – has made me that much prouder of the accomplishments the students have achieved.

Going to the Worlds with a different team of students every year that the team has competed for the last five years – and taking two teams this year – is something I am very excited about. I feel I am a role model for girls who think science is too hard. I know girls can do it – and seeing me succeed is one way to show them that they can too!

You can read about the team in a recent Lowell Sun article.
